Mayor pays tribute to former Fianna Fail TD Michael Collins

  • Michael Collins RIP

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley, has paid tribute today following the passing of Former councillor and Fianna Fail TD Michael Collins. Collins, 82, was a councillor in Limerick County and TD for the Limerick West Dáil constituency, having been first elected 1997.

“The Collins family name is synonymous with Limerick politics. Michael, father of current Councillor and former Mayor, James, won a Dail seat, held for many years by his brother Gerard, a seat originally won by his father, James, in 1948

“His passion for Limerick politics could be seen both through his work as a Councillor, chairman of the council in 1985 and later as a TD. He will be sadly missed. My condolences at this time to his wife Una, daughters Michelle and Deirdre and to his son James” Mayor Foley confirmed.

Chief Executive of Limerick City and County Council, Pat Daly also paid tribute: “Michael will be remembered for always putting the best interests of Limerick first. Be that nationally or locally. To have such a long political career shows that he was a man of huge integrity and sought to make sure that Limerick was the forefront of his work. The thoughts of the entire Limerick City and County Council staff are with James and the extended Collins family at this time.”
