Limerick City and County Council calls for an end to illegal dumping

Limerick City and County Council is calling for an end to illegal dumping after it has seen an increase in the number of complaints over the past number of weeks. Since the restrictions imposed by the government as part of plans to prevent the spread of Covid-19, there has been an increase in incidences of illegal dumping.

Crews from the Council are working to remove the illegal dumping, clean up the site and will be looking at prosecutions provided there is sufficient evidence.

While illegal dumping is happening around the county, there has been a particular increase in the city and especially down laneways.

It is disappointing to know that there is a group of people across Limerick who will not do the right thing when it comes to disposing of their waste.

It is particularly disappointing that this cohort believe they can just dump their rubbish for others to pick up. They have no regard for their communities, and the wider environment by discarding their rubbish inappropriately.

This comes at a time where local authorities including Limerick are under added pressure during this pandemic to deliver as many services as possible. We are seeking the cooperation of the public to help us do that during what is a very challenging time.

Limerick City and County Council is reminding people that household waste collections are continuing and you should continue to use your bin collection as normal.

Civic Amenity Centres are open in Mungret, Kilmallock and Newcastle West, while Gortadroma is open on Wednesdays.

Limerick City and County Council is also reminding people that they should only use businesses who have valid Waste Permits to dispose of their rubbish. If not, and if the rubbish is dumped illegally, the owner of the rubbish can be fined and/ or prosecuted.

Limerick City Council is asking people to ensure that all litter is disposed of carefully and appropriately to help protect us all.
