More than 40 events taking place across Limerick city and county as part of National Heritage Week 2017

Limerick’s rich and varied heritage will be in the spotlight over the next week as part of National Heritage Week taking place from 19 to 27 August 2017.

Events are being organised by heritage enthusiasts and community groups who have put together a creative programme offering a wide range of activities.

During Heritage Week 2017, people in Limerick are being given the opportunity to step back in time with a historic walk in Caherconlish, learn about the important work done by bees. Or why not find out about the Middle Stone Age in Castleconnell area or join historical and heritage walking tours in Bruff, Kilmallock, Rathkeale or Griston Bog in Ballylanders.

For the more energetic, there is a historic trail of Limerick city by bike.

Other events including an intriguing look at Abbeyfeale’s natural heritage, a discussion on the 1917 Russian Revolution and Ireland in Newcastle West and how to stitch Limerick Lace are just the tip of the iceberg.

National Heritage Week is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.

Most of the events are free so that heritage can be accessed and appreciated by all including families.

Bernadette Collins Cassidy, Executive Planner with Limerick City and County Council said: “Limerick City and County Council is delighted to contribute again to National Heritage Week, with over 30 local communities in Limerick to a busy and diverse programme of more than 40 events throughout Limerick.”

“The theme is ‘Nature and People’. The programme of events provides many different opportunities to see how our lives are interconnected with nature, influencing built heritage, cultural heritage and local history. We encourage people to avail of these opportunities provided by local communities and support the volunteers and organisers.”

“People can learn about pollinators, invasive species, local history, archaeology and artefacts, Limerick’s industrial heritage, and boat building heritage as well as, art, craft, music, and historical walks and nature walks throughout the week.”
