As the June Bank Holiday weekend approaches, Limerick City and County Council is reminding householders and businesses doing a bank holiday clean-out to always check that their waste collection operator has an official waste collection permit.
Illegal dumping is costly and threatens our environment and Limerick City and County Council Environment Education Officer, Sinead McDonnell said we all need to take responsibility.
“If you use an unlicensed waste collector your waste could end up on our roads, forest trails or countryside,” she said. “Always use an operator with a national waste collection permit number. And if you’re unsure, check out mywaste.ie for guidance.”
If you are embarking on a bank holiday clear-out of bulky waste includes mattresses, beds, and attic or shed clear-outs, here is how to dispose of bulky waste:
- Use a permitted waste collector who will come directly to your home to remove bulky waste items on an appointment basis
- Hire a skip from a permitted waste collector
- Bring directly to an authorised waste transfer station
- Bring certain items to a Limerick Recycling Centre
When using permitted waste collectors:
- Ensure that the waste collector has a permit for the type of waste they are collecting. Visit mywaste.ie to check for a full list of waste collection service providers and what they are permitted to collect
- Ask to see your waste collectors waste collection permit
- Note the time and date of the collection and the licence number of the vehicle
- Always, always get a receipt
It is a crime to hire an illegal (unpermitted) waste collector or skip operator, and to do so could lead to prosecution.
