Homeless Services

The service is provided with the close partnership of the HSE, Department of Social Protection and voluntary housing bodies.

On presentation to the Homeless Action Team, the homeless person or homeless family are fully assessed using a Holistic Needs Assessment to ensure that all of their needs in terms of economic, health and accommodation are met.

Homeless Solutions

The Team has a range of accommodation options available via contracted services by both Limerick City and County Council and the HSE with voluntary housing bodies. These include family apartments, single hostels for both males and females, women's and children's facilities with opportunities available in the single hostels when various providers are at capacity.

In relation to family accommodation capacity, a family is supported by an exceptional needs payment from the Department of Social Protection towards its own private accommodation costs. This typically covers a short period of time to allow the family access housing in the private rented market, voluntary housing or a range of housing options provided by the local authority.

Limerick City and County Council works closely with all homeless persons to ensure that their stay in emergency accommodation is as short as possible. The local authority has two resettlement Case Managers working closely with voluntary housing staff in hostels to support and source solutions for individuals or families.

Case Managers take into account the multitude of circumstances in relation to meeting the long term accommodation needs of homeless persons.
