The newly opened boutique hotel, the Bedford Townhouse & Café is a significant asset to the architectural heritage of Bedford Row, Limerick.

Restored with original architectural features, and stylish modern touches, the townhouse is centrally located in the heart of Limerick city within walking distance of many sights and attractions.

Denise Brazil, General Manager of The Bedford said they have had a very positive reaction to The Bedford Townhouse & Café since opening.

“The local business network in Limerick has been very supportive of this project and we’ve had wonderful feedback from our guests who have stayed with us. We were also delighted to be featured in the Irish Independent 2019 Fab 50 list, which was recently published.

“There has been somewhat of a renaissance in Limerick over the last few years and in particular in the Hospitality industry. This expansion has brought new life to Limerick both in terms of people visiting Limerick as a destination or looking to relocate for work and family. With this growth comes the need for a wider range of hospitality offerings and The Bedford, as a new boutique property, was born out of this vision.”

The Bedford has 10 employees between the Townhouse and Café, and is also part of the Limerick Travel Group, which has been in business in Limerick for over 48 years.

The heritage of Bedford House (which is home to The Bedford and Limerick Travel) played a pivotal part in the creation of The Bedford. Denise explained: “Our building dates back to 1830 and was formerly two Georgian townhouses, which had many interesting former residents and one in particular – Peter Tait. Many will know Tait as the founder of the Limerick Clothing Factory and he started operations from right here in Bedford House.

“When we started this journey we knew we wanted to provide a very unique guest experience to our guests and the history of Bedford House is at the heart of this and is also the reason behind our needle and thread logo.”

The Bedford project was launched in November 2017 and has been a number of years in the making. The first phase of the project, The Bedford Café opened in July 2018 and this was followed by the stylish 12 bedrooms which were unveiled just before Christmas.

“The Bedford is very much a Limerick property and we have set ourselves with the goal of ensuring that every guest that stays with us knows that they are staying in a Limerick property – all our 12 rooms are named after Limerick landmarks and we have a Bedford Row Heritage Trail in our Parlour room area which celebrates the wonderful businesses that have operated on this street at one time or another. For us, Limerick is part of the guest experience at The Bedford and we are very focused on promoting Limerick as a destination with our guests and the many landmarks and experiences on our doorstep,” said Denise.

The Bedford goes a step further as a little oasis in the city, providing surprising features to enable guests to unwind and relax including The Parlour Room hideaway lounge area, a gym and steamroom, wellness breakfast in The Bedford Café and a rooftop garden.

Denise concluded: “Through the development phase of The Bedford we have had the full support of Limerick City and County Council. Prior to and since opening we have had great support from the Marketing & Communications team in Limerick City and County Council who are great advocates for new enterprise in Limerick. We also had the honour of Mayor of the City & County of Limerick, Cllr. James Collins officially opening The Bedford just last month. There are great supports and services available for new businesses in Limerick, which I hope will attract further enterprise to the city and county in the coming years.”
