Limerick Milk Market’s 500,000 visitors spend €32m in city centre
The Milk Market had a record year, attracting over 500,000 visitors in the last twelve months and contributing €32m to the City Centre economy, the recent AGM of the Limerick Market Trustees was told.
Research carried out by Limerick Institute of Technology on behalf of the Limerick Market Trustees found that the visitors to the Milk Market are spending €32m per annum in the city centre and for 75% of these visitors the Milk Market is the main reason they come and shop in the city centre.
With an average of 137 stalls offering a wide variety of produce each week and a total of 163 market days in the last year including every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Milk Market continues to grow and has become a real driver of activity in the heart of the city.
In addition to the market days, the venue held 46 other events including evening concerts, charity and community events which shows the many uses of this wonderful venue in the city centre.
Chairman, Cllr. Michael Sheahan, who was reappointed as Chairman at the AGM, said "The Milk Market is the No. 1 outdoor market in Ireland and we are very proud of its achievements in the last year. The completion of the development and expansion of market days, staging of evening concerts, recitals, craft fairs, fashion shows and charity events shows the many different uses that the Milk Market has and this is all helping to bring more vibrancy to the City centre. I would like to thank the management and staff of the market, my fellow trustees and Limerick Chamber who manage the affairs of the market on behalf of the Trustees. It is through their dedication and effort that all of this has been possible.”
"The trustees have recently agreed its plan for the year ahead which will seek to further increase market days, family events, concerts and other attractions to the venue under the direction and management of Limerick Chamber and the Market Manager and his team. We welcome suggestions from the public on how we can further develop the Milk Market and anyone who would like to use the venue should contact David O’Brien, Market Manager" He added.
Gordon Kearney, President of Limerick Chamber said "We are delighted to serve the Limerick Market Trustees and continue to build on the success of the Milk Market with further development of markets and events to suit a wider audience which it is hoped will result in increased activity at the Milk Market and further economic benefit to the City centre as a whole.”.
