How to Dispose of an end-of-life Vehicle

You have an old car at the end of its life, and you want to dispose of it, so what do you do?

The regulations effective since 1st January 2007 for all end-of-life cars set out specific measures to ensure that old cars are de-polluted and dismantled in a manner that doesn’t pose a threat to our environment or to human health.

These regulations place obligations on:

1. The producers, the vehicle manufacturers/importers
2. Dismantler/vehicle scrap facilities
3. You the registered owner

Facilities dealing with end-of-life vehicles must meet stringent environmental standards for the collection, storage and treatment of end-of-life vehicles. These facilities are known as authorised treatment facilities or ATF's for short. Please see below for current list of authorised treatment facilities permitted by Limerick City and County Council.

Where do I bring my car?

You should only deal with a properly permitted authorised treatment facility when getting rid of your old vehicle as these are the only facilities that have met the environmental standards and can issue Certificates of Destruction.

How can I as a car owner/registered owner do this?

You must locate either an Authorised Treatment Facility (List of ATFs available to download in the supporting documents below) or an authorised Waste Collector. Using the List of Waste/EWC code 16 01 04, search for an authorised Waste Collector and an Authorised Treatment Facility at the National Waste Collection Permit Office and arrange for the removal of the vehicle to an ATF in this way.

The Authorised Treatment Facility will issue you with a Certificate of Destruction which will confirm that the vehicle will be de-polluted and dismantled in an environmentally safe manner (scrapped correctly).
The facility will then notify the Vehicle Registration Unit in Shannon and the destruction of your vehicle will be noted in the National Vehicle File. The only document you need to give the facility is the Vehicle Registration Certificate (RF101) or the log book for the car.

How much does it cost ?

Where an authorised treatment facility accepts an end-of-life vehicle from the registered owner, no charge may be imposed by the facility on the owner of that vehicle once the vehicle is intact or does not have refuse added to it.  However, authorised Waste Collectors do charge for their services.

Please Note: Failure to bring your end of life car to one of the ATFs can attract a fixed payment notice in the amount of €100.
