Minister Varadkar to make address on Securing the Future of Shannon Airport
Limerick Chamber, with sponsors UPC Business, is delighted to announce that Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar is to address the business community on "Securing the Future of Shannon Airport" next Friday morning the 27th January at 8am in the Radisson Hotel.
Speaking about the event Limerick Chamber President Kieran MacSweeney emphasised the importance of international connectivity for the entire western seaboard specifically via Shannon Airport "The Airport is a key infrastructural asset serving the tourism, enterprise and industrial business needs of the entire West coast of Ireland and its location mid-way along the Atlantic Corridor supports government policy of balanced regional development. It connects businesses in the region to suppliers and customers throughout the world and acts as a filter for overseas tourists to access our beautiful region."
"As we all know the future of the airport is at a crossroads at the moment, with declining passenger numbers and revenue streams. The Minister commissioned a report regarding the future ownership and operation options at the airport pre-Christmas. We have all eagerly anticipated an announcement by the Minister regarding the recommendations contained in the Booz Report so we look forward to hearing at the breakfast what the Minister’s plans are regarding the future of the airport" continued Mr. Mac Sweeney "This is a unique opportunity for the business community to hear an address by the Minister on this very contentious and topical debate" continued Mr. MacSweeney.
Speaking of Minister Varadkar Mr. MacSweeney pointed out the importance of the Minister’s portfolio for the region "We are delighted the Minister has agreed to address the business community. His portfolio is of huge importance to the current and future economic well being of the Limerick region."
"In addition to transport connectivity, both Tourism and Sport are two key industries: the European City of Sport title was worth approximately €70 million to the region in 2011 and we have the best standard of hotel accommodation and value available in any city in Ireland" concluded Mr. MacSweeney.
Gary David Jordan, B2B SME Channel Manager of UPC Business said "UPC is very pleased to partner with Limerick Chamber of Commerce and with businesses throughout the Mid-West region where we employ over 380 people at our national customer contact and administrative centre in Limerick. We are contributing to business growth and development across the region through our major investments in next generation broadband infrastructure and the provision of advanced telecommunications services which enhance the business competitiveness of our customers. This is providing an important stimulus for businesses locally and nationally across all sectors of the economy."
