Skatepark

The Skatepark at Mount Kennett was officially opened on the 18th of July, 2008 by his worship the Mayor Cllr John Gilligan.

The Skatepark was constructed by Messrs John Cradock Ltd, and was designed by Mr Nic De Jong, Consultant Architect, in conjunction with the services of Mr Michael O’ Doherty of Lawlor and Partners Quantity Surveyors. The project was designed to complement the other riverside and City Centre projects.

The total cost of the project including construction and fees is circa €300,000 and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has approved grant aid of €125,000 towards the project.   Limerick City Council has provided the balance of the funding, as well as the river side site.  The City Council will also manage the site following its completion.

Skate Boarding has a huge following in Limerick, and the location and design of the Skatepark followed on extensive consultation with the end users and the Skatepark Action Group.  Planning approval for the project was received in October, 2007.  The construction process commenced in April 2008 and was completed in a twelve week timescale.

The Mayor, Cllr John Gilligan and the members of Limerick City Council have embraced the positive attributes of this project and call on its users and their leaders to work closely with the Sport and Recreation Department of Limerick City Council, under its Director Pat Dowling, to ensure its success as a recreational amenity.

The operation of the Skatepark will adhere to the criteria laid down by the Planning Department, including:

Specified Opening Hours of:     9 am to 9 pm in the Spring/Summer and

9 am to 4 pm in the Autumn/Winter

in the interest of the residential amenity of local residents.
