Shoot! At The Artist

July 23rd-August 27th 2004

SHOOT! AT THE ARTIST is both an exhibition and a story of the last years of the totalitarian regime in the former Yugoslavia. In a series of original posters, it particularly documents the part that some of the youth movements in the Republic of Slovenia played in the downfall of the government of fifty years standing.

SHOOT! AT THE ARTIST! is an example of how the arts can highlight, in a peaceful and yet forceful manner. Arts movements like NSK and musicians like Laibach parodied the totalitarian stance of the government. Through humorous articles and covers of Mladina magazine a volley of metaphorical spears was directed towards Tito's regime. The power of humour aided the demise of the old world that eventually fell apart when people started to laugh at it. SHOOT! AT THE ARTIST! is an exhibition that uses posters, humour and video to portray this demise, and provides us with some thought provoking images that don't seek to offer solutions but do cause us to question.

SHOOT AT THE ARTIST! is produced in Ireland by The Art Projects Network on behalf of The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia, and has travelled to other venues throughout Ireland.
